Spring Trends & The Sophisticated 70s.

I have been terrible at updating this blog... Sorry guys.

But I want to write a little about a few of the things I've seen from show to show in the newest Spring lines! I have been obsessed with so many of the new trends I've been seeing. My predictions for the new lines were LOTS of color blocking and less pattern mixing, lots of length, maybe some deep necklines, and lots of white.

I was happy to find that a lot of my predictions for Spring were right! Maxi skirts and floor sweeping hemlines (good news for us Mormon girls..) are here to stay. White is very big for spring as well as quite a bit of a bright (orange based) red and peach. Some powdery blues, but LOTS of corals, peach, and red. Which I am so happy about. Anything in peach or coral is my favorite!!!

Sidenote: I really do believe peach & coral are some of the most easy colors to wear for any skin tone. It just needs to be worn correctly and you can look fresh & beautiful! Anyone with fair to deep ebony tones can wear peach & coral!

Also, we 70s have been having their moment in the sun. The Marc Jacobs Spring 2011 show was screaming "Sophisticated 70s". There is so much of that classic ease to the 70s and I am only so happy to swing with the trend. What is your favorite look of the 70s? The wide leg pant? The tall collar? The high waists?

So today I got asked to be a model for a short photography workshop in downtown provo. Okay, cool. Should be fun. It wasn't the first time I've modeled but I can't say I am a good model or anything. I wouldn't ever tell people "I model.."

Anyway, So I have this issue with my face. Something I like to call "Permanent Bitch Face". This occurs pretty often when I think I have a pleasant look on my face and someone takes a picture of me. Later on, I look at that picture and I look like I'm pissed. Like someone peed in my cheerios that morning... It's the worst. In fact, I've recently learned that some people in high school never approached me because I "always looked mad". Whoops.
The truth is, my straight face looks like a mad face.

Please tell me this doesn't happen to just me?

So basically my hope is that pictures that come from today's workshop don't come out looking like I'm glaring at people. Permanent bitch face.. It's a curse, I tell you.

I think this may be my favorite Couture show thus far. Every single look, I am dying over. I cannot choose a single one that I can say is my favorite. Those powdery blues, the gorgeous earthy taupes all the way down to those dark purple & navy gowns. Oh, I'll stop now and just show you some pictures.

David (my dearest husband) is such a trooper whenever I get to talking

about the newest runway shows. Especially couture. I'm over here talking his

ear off, gushing over every minute gorgeous detail in these pieces & he just

sits there and listens. What a good guy.

Trends I'm Not So Sure About

Wow, it's been way too long since I posted last. Sorry, guys.

So shopping online and blog stalking, I've been coming across some trends that I find... not so cute? I might be overruled here, some people really like these looks. And I'm not saying they can't be done right. I AM saying that it's rare that I see it done right.

Which brings me to

TRENDS I'M NOT SO SURE ABOUT:

Sheer Maxi skirts/dresses. Generally I say anything where

you can see a girl's underwear (besides lingerie) is a little awkward.

Kind of reminds me of the whale tale thong trend.

Lets just go with a maxi skirt that isn't sheer, please?

Cropped t-shirts. Seriously, I really want these to be cute

but they're so shapeless and awkward looking on everyone that isn't

this model.. ↑ ↑ ↑

I call these Frankenstein shoes. They come in all sorts of varieties,

Leather, studded, leopard print, and pictured above, blue velvet.

Frankly, I just think these things are plain UGLY.

Like, of all the shoes you could wear, you wear these? No.

Have you ever had a near-disastrous bike experience in New York?
My most harrowing experience was riding back from the Brooklyn Flea on my bike, and my basket was filled with bric-a-brac that I’d picked up — probably too much stuff for the bike. And my brakes petered out on me. It wasn’t a cute scene at all.

Do you bike to work?
I haven’t biked to work yet. I am usually lugging tons of stuff with me, and my current bike’s brakes still aren’t so great. Maybe once I get my new one from Adeline Adeline I’ll give it a go.

What should one carry in a bike basket?
I love fresh flowers, so I'm always picking up big bunches of flowers wherever I can. A bike basket filled with flowers is one of my favorite sites to see in the springtime in New York.

Short Blog Break

The Artist: Hannah Hillam

I first met Hannah at my old place of work. Toting a sketchbook and I didn't know her so I didn't say much. I remember her letting me flip through her sketchbook. I am/was studying illustration at the time (it seems like aeons since I last attended a class. ::sad face::) and I always love to see people's art. Anyway, I was immediately impressed by Hannah's distinct artistic voice.
I believe the first drawings were one out of a story about one, Mad Margaret (am I getting this right, Hannah?) ....

Now years later, she's still making beautiful art.
I pale in comparison!

Oh, have you seen my other blog, The Fleurist?
Hannah did the design on it!
I've gotten tons of compliments and even requests for the name of the person who did such a great job.

Wandering the internet checking out the latest in the fashion world.
I get so inspired by what people are wearing but more by their personal style.
Their voice that they express through their clothing.
I have a crazy obsession with fashion but dare not call myself a fashionista.
I mean, I know how to dress...
But I feel like the word Fashionista has a certain look that should go along with it.
Know who I'm talking about?

She's that girl who wouldn't be caught dead without her heels or LV bag.

Oh please, oh please let this be real!

I'm not that girl. I'm a MOM. Which means I have to make a compromise. Lots of accessorizing becomes a hinderance when in the presence of a grabby child. Carrying a car seat isn't too convenient when wearing my 6 inch heels. The same way, my purse becomes full of baby things. Sippy cups, extra diapers, things to keep the kid busy, etc. Either that or the diaper bag becomes my big, bulky, (Not to mention hideous) accessory. That's not to be mistaken with the mom running across Walmart in her sweats and oversized college t-shirt with holes in the armpits. I'm not that girl either. I'd like to think I've got a good balance between function and fashion.

In short, this is my declaration. I LIKE MY STYLE.
I like to tell people who I am by what I am wearing.
I like wearing things that other people wouldn't wear.
I like to surprise people with colors and pattern combinations.

Movies You Should Watch: Tron Legacy

FINALLY got around to seeing this one. At the dollar theater. In 3D. Actually, I would say that 3D is less than impressive, these days. But what can you do? We might as well just ride it out.

But anyway, I digress...

Tron was a movie from back in the day. If you haven't seen it, do. This was often watched in my younger years when I didn't know what else to watch. I absolutely love it. My husband says that I "dork all over the place" when I talk about Tron. Once I saw the trailer for Tron: Legacy, I was scared. What's this? A new movie that may or may not have anything to do with the original movie (besides wardrobe and special effects)? Is it even going to work?
I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was! First off, Jeff Bridges?! The animation that they did to make him look like his younger self was super impressive! The only thing I would have to say against it is that the mouth of a talking C.L.U. tends to give him away as being animation. I loved the characters, the effects were wonderful (I LOVED the way the Grid looked) and do I even have to mention the music? I can safely say that this soundtrack, even though I'm not really a Daft Punk fan to begin with, is solid gold. I felt like Tron: Legacy stayed close enough to the first Tron that it wasn't its own entity (Like all of those Land Before Time atrocities? Nooooo, thank you).

All in all, I can say I really liked that movie! I'd go see it again.
I'm just a huge Tron fan. Can you blame me?

(A great character in the movie, Castor/Zeus, who apparently was inspired by David Bowie? Awesome.

I FINALLY watched "Tangled"!

I've heard such great things about it. I'm so glad I wasn't as irritated by Mandy Moore (who does the voice of Rapunzel) as I thought I was going to be. I swore if I could hear just a trace of that stupid song from "A Walk To Remember", I'd lose it. It's all we need.. to hear more Nicholas Sparks garbage while trying to enjoy my movie. Anyway, if you haven't seen Tangled yet, go see it! It was all of the stuff that makes a great movie. Funny, sweet, great characters (so important).

Kirsten Dunst. The actress I would vote "Celebrity Who Looks Like She'd Be Fun To Hang Out With". I love her in pretty much every movie she's been in. Her little dance on the bed in her undies in Eternal Sunshine, the creepy stare at the end of Virgin Suicides, even the southern accent whilst flirting with Orlando Bloom in Elizabethtown.

I just noticed in some polaroids on Band Of Outsiders, that the cute blonde in these photos is (surprise, surprise..) Kirsten Dunst! Dressed to the nines, looking like she could be just "discovering" new places with a friend who just happens to have a polaroid camera on them.

I Like Lykke.

I have played this song like 10 gazillion times in the last day or so. I'm obsessed with the video and the song. I love that Lykke is able to be so versatile with her music. She's great at the mellow "chill out" songs but she also does fabulously with her more upbeat tunes..

My theory on this video is that Lykke, dressed in black, represents death.

Actually, this comment put it pretty perfectly.

Don't think I'm stupid or anything, because I'm not thinking as deeply as others, but I feel that the story matches the title because it's I Follow Rivers. I've been all about the 80's the past few days. I am going to be working on an 80's inspired photo shoot here soon so I've been researching the clothes, the pop culture, and (of course) the music behind this fantastic decade. In case you're wondering, I don't mean "80's Themed High School Dance" type stuff.... By that, I mean like people thinking the 80's was all side ponytails and neon color leotards (maybe in an aerobics class...). I'm talking LEGIT.

Alright, so I've already done a Movies list...

But I felt inspired by my dearest friend (SOUL SISTA) Kiersten, who listed her Top 15 movies she couldn't live without... at least for right now.

As she so perfectly put it,

"Asking what my 15 favorite movies of all time are is like asking me to choose a favorite sibling. It can't really be done! There is so much beautiful art in the form of film out there and I am constantly changing and evolving in my taste that it's hard to say just what the best is out there."

Angie's Top 15 Movies I Can't Live Without:

Here it goes, in no particular order:

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 1:

I am so happy with the most recent Harry Potter movies. When I'd heard that Deathly Hallows was being split into two movies, I thought, LAME! How dare they split it up like that? And then after re-reading the book, I thought how could they NOT split it up? There is so much happening that there is no way that they could fit it all into one movie without skipping some super important parts! Voldemort is every bit as creepy as I imagined him. That scene with Bathilda Bagshot and Nagini? I pooped my pants. I cannot wait to see the very last installment.

Chicago:

This has to be one of the most downright sexy movies I've ever seen. This movie is not what I would call inspirational or anything like that. But it's such a fun movie! The music, the cast (come on, John C. Reilly, Catherine Zeta Jones, and Richard Gere and it doesn't stop there), the costumes, the lies, the deceit, the greed. One of the best Musicals you're likely to see.

I LOVE it.

Atonement:

Is there any film more gorgeous? This movie will make me cry every time. Keira Knightley and James McAvoy are perfect together. I spend the whole movie willing them together. I feel myself so frustrated and compelled by their love for each other and by the circumstances that keep them apart. And by the end of the movie.. I won't spoil it for those of you who haven't seen it... WEEP!

Romeo + Juliet:

Another movie straight off of my Movies That Make Me Cry List. One of the most tragic stories ever told about love and loss. In fact, I get upset when people tell me that they hate the story, or even worse, have never heard of it! Claire Danes plays the perfect Juliet. Sweet, naive, beautiful. And Leonardo DiCaprio (do I need to go on about how perfect he is?) makes me fall in love with him every time he says the line "Did my heart love til' now? Forswear it, sight! For I ne'er saw true beauty til' this night" as he watches Juliet. DiCaprio and John Leguizamo bring the movie to such intensity and in the end, Romeo and Juliet are together in death. Is there any doubt why this story has lasted the test of time?

Lord of the Rings:

I cannot possibly talk about one without including the others. I think what draws me to this story is the battle between good and evil. The entire series, Sauron is ever present in Frodo's journey. Always calling to him, always trying to pull him down. Frodo, whose life was happy and untainted in the beginning of The Fellowship of the Ring, goes through this journey that takes him to his limit. He is the humblest of creatures who has taken on the burden that no other being can take on.. in order to save Middle Earth from the slavery and captivity and ultimately from the clutches of Evil. Truthfully, my favorite character through the whole of the 3 movies, is Samwise. Anyone with me here? Would Frodo even have made it if it wasn't for Samwise?

Labyrinth:

Time for a break from all the serious movies..

I am pretty sure I could quote you this whole movie.. I could probably sing you every song! When I was a kid, I wanted to look just like Jennifer Connelly does in this movie. That shirt with the poofy sleeves and that huge menswear inspired vest? Yes please! Actually, you know who I wanted to look like in the movie more than Jennifer? David Bowie. Yep.. I said it. My crush on David Bowie goes much deeper than his feathery outfits in this movie, of course. But seriously, if I could get away with wearing a spiky mullet wig and contact juggle AND wear spandex pants, I would.

Sleeping Beauty:

I totally agree with Kiersten on this one. In fact, my DVD copy is so scratched from being watched so often. The sheer detail that went into that movie artistically, is totally bewildering. I get exhausted just looking at the detail in the trees, the castle, everything! Take a minute when you watch it to notice that each leaf on the trees was hand painted! The texture in the stone, in the fabric, all of it. If you notice, stylistically speaking, the movie looks a lot like a tapestry that you might find from around that time period! Great job, Disney. And other than that, the music (Thanks Tchaikovsky) and Maleficent is probably hands down one of my most favorite Disney villains. Can we say Bad Ass?

Watchmen:

Speaking of Bad Asses..

(This one is pretty self explanatory... if you haven't seen it, go see it. Really.)

Fantastic Mr. Fox
There are so many clever things about this movie. So many little glances and gestures that make me laugh out loud. Things they say like the word "cuss" in place of any actual curse words. I think perhaps some of my most favorite movements by the characters in the movie are when they wiggle their hands by the sides of their face and say that little ditty about "being different" as well as the little dance the animals do at the end of the movie inside the supermarket. I'm pretty sure real animals don't move like that... My personal favorite character: Ash. :)

Gran Torino
Clint Eastwood's character in this movie (Walt Kowalski) is such a turd in this movie! He's the You-Really-Hate-This-Guy-And-Then-You-Realize-He's-Actually-Nice-Inside-And-Then-You-Like-Him Turd in the movie... Did I get that right? Anyway, the movie centers on Walt after the death of his wife and when a Vietnamese family moves in next door, he slowly befriends one of the teenagers in the family and helps to protect him from his cousins who try to recruit him for their gang. Seriously, if you can stand a little (who am I kidding here? A LOT..) of foul language, you need to see this movie. It is fantastic!

My Best Friend's Wedding
I know what you're thinking. Julia Roberts? Really?
Yes, really. I can say that even with my severe dislike for chick flicks, this one takes the cake. My favorite character in this whole movie has to be George (played by Rupert Everett) who is the voice of reason, sophistication, and of "Say A Little Prayer"? Cool.

Inglorious Basterds
Probably the ONLY movie where I can say that I am not attracted to Brad Pitt. Mostly I just wish I could be on his side during this movie so I don't get scalped. This movie is so Tarrantino but different from his other movies in a very subtle way. Not to mention, he takes a little bit of artistic liberty and re-writes the way it should have ended.

Black Swan
Just saw this one today and I don't think I could finish this blog post and not mention this movie. If you haven't seen it, stop reading right now and go see it. RIGHT NOW. Seriously, I found myself not being able to sit still, on edge and a little uncomfortable during the whole movie. There is so much tension and anxiety, I can't even stand it. Natalie Portman's performance is literally dizzying. You find yourself inside of the mind of Nina Sayer and you wonder the whole time if you actually know what is happening in the plot or if this is perhaps a figment of Nina's imagination. It's thrilling, beautiful, and super sexy (Mila Kunis, you saucy minx, you..).

P.S. I Love You
Another one for the sentimental girls out there. Love Gerard Butler? Here's a winner. The plot goes like this, Hilary Swank (the other dude in the movie.. AW just kiddin') loses her husband to terminal cancer. She's super stuck on his death especially since he urged her to start a family so much and at the last second, BAM, he dies.. She regrets not having fulfilled his last wish. But then to her surprise, he's set up this whole thing where he sends her letters after he's died to help her cope and get over his death. Plus, a lot of it takes place in Ireland! Super romantic, super sentimental. SO good.

Tombstone
It's because of Kiersten that I've even seen this movie. And truthfully, I've never much enjoyed Westerns until I saw Tombstone. I've seen quite a few since then and I have to say that this one without a doubt is probably my favorite. Kurt Russell as Wyatt Earp and Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday (does it get anymore epic than that?) cleaning up Dodge City from the cowboys! This one is a "go-to" movie for any occasion. I truly can't say enough about this movie. It is so stinking good!

I get rather critical of photography or should I say "Faux-tography" as so many people are guilty of.
Like, anyone with a camera is a photographer..
Anyone with the least bit of photoshop knowledge
who can turn everything black and white except for one thing in the picture
who can maybe, close up on something and call it photography
oh hey, look. A close up of a traffic sign or graffiti wall, maybe put a really intense angle on it.... cool. Photography right?

No.

I find it hard to get a photographer who knows what they're doing. Who not only loves to take beautiful photos but makes it their personal mission to learn as much as possible. To ALWAYS make their work better. To give a sense of place and person. And with a subject like Family Photos (which can go south realllly quick), it's nice to see someone who can do them right.

Not sure what's been so fascinating to me about Ireland lately. I think perhaps it must be how GREEN everything is there. I mean, just google it and BAM. It's like, "Oh hey, I'm just the most lush green place you've ever seen... No biggie."

Ladies and Gentlemen we are in for some draftiness around your ankles next year! It looks like flare/bell bottom pants are making their comeback in 2011. Did anyone NOT see this coming??

Seems to me like I've been wearing nothing but skinny jeans since 2004. They really made their stride in 2007/8 and now skinny jeans are a staple in everyone's closets. Am I wrong? I'm pretty sure there's a type of skinny jeans for ever body type out there. But if you kept up on your Fashion Weeks, you know that with the 1970's revival, inevitably comes the bell bottom pants. Truthfully, I am looking forward to the change. It will probably take some adjustment seeing as it's been a long time since a pair of flare pants has been an every day thing. Flare pants seem to be making their way into menswear as well. Looking sporty (as in, active wear. Not clothes you wear to play sports) and casual. To those who feel so comfortable in their skinnies, I say embrace the change! You might be surprised at how great you look in them.

Now, reading FLARE JEANS, some may mistake this trend as being Baggy Jeans or even the Boyfriend Jean trends that were so popular in 2008 and '09.

A few tips for Ladies choosing your pair of flares:

a hem that is at least as wide as your foot - the men's hem that you can see on the pictures above is more slim than that of some of the women's flares. This rule may vary according to your body shape but this is a generally safe guideline.
loose at the knee - I've already see some takes on the trend where the jeans are cut very slim down the thigh and the knee and then flare out from below the knee cap. This is a 1990s interpretation of flares and not the style that's on trend in 2011

Check out these photos of Daniel Radcliffe by Dazed & Confused (November Issue). He talks about being 21 and being in the public eye, his career after the last Harry Potter movie is out.

He also talks about having celebrated his 21st birthday in Russia with his closest friends and escaping the throes of the paparazzi. He opens up about doing all the normal things a 21-year-old does and tells us that besides writing poetry and preparing for a Broadway show, he listens to the likes of Regina Spektor, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Tom Waits, and TV on the Radio... Pretty good taste, I'd say.

The big news.

If you haven't heard already,

RACHEL ZOE has confirmed she is PREGNANT!

(finally!)

Not a huge surprise since last season of The Rachel Zoe Project mostly focused on Rodger's (her husband) insistence on having a baby before it's too late! Not going to lie, I myself was crossing my fingers for this to happen. I got so frustrated by Rachel saying things like "My work IS my baby.." any avoiding the subject whenever it came up between her and Rodger. Anyway, the season ended with her and Rodger and an appointment at a fertility clinic. There have been rumors flying around that Rachel's been pregnant, and despite constant denial, we knew it (or at least we had a hunch). At a recent event, Rachel was pictured in a long flow-y black gown (looking fantastic, as always) and I couldn't help but notice that her belly looked a little bit round under the satin-y dress. One article said that she even had rubbed her belly sometime that night making the bump look even more like a baby bump than just a fleshy food baby. Ran across the article this morning that says Rachel has finally confirmed the pregnancy! Though she didn't say how far along she is, I am so happy for both her and Rodger. (David thinks this is really weird since I don't know them personally, just through articles and TV...) But I am happy for them nonetheless and I hope to see documentation of this on a new season of The Rachel Zoe Project! Read more about the pregnancy, here.

Karl Lagerfeld Explains Coco Chanel’s Two Biggest Mistakes

Karl Lagerfeld recently unveiled a new take on the classic quilted Chanel bag, with little enamel ladybugs crawling all over it. An odd choice in the age of bedbugs, or a genius take on making what's now (bugs) what will always be cool (quilted Chanel bags)? The Kaiser emphasized the importance of fashion designers not ignoring what's going on in the world at the moment at the International Herald Tribune's Luxury Heritage conference this week in explaining the two big mistakes Coco Chanel made toward the end of her career.

"The first was when she said 'Not one man I have spoken to likes a woman in miniskirts.' I think no one dared to tell this 86-year-old lady that miniskirts are great and really sexy," he says. "Number two was when she decided blue jeans were horrible. This was the fashion of the world at that partuclar [sic] moment — it was the Sixties. No one wanted to be told by an old lady that miniskirts and jeans weren't chic. The result was that she lost her power and in the end no one cared about what she did."

Karl showed both jeans and minis in his last Chanel show.
